James Elbert Ruggles: (Find-A-Grave Memorial)
James Elbert Ruggles was born February 23, 1836 on Cabin Creek in Lewis County, Kentucky the son of Silas A. Ruggles, Sr. (born February 14, 1813-died July 30, 1881) and Matilda Roberts (born December 13, 1811-died September 8, 1897). James Elbert was a Civil War veteran, enlisting in Company "K," 23rd Regiment of the Kentucky Infantry (Kentucky Volunteers) in 1861. According to his military records, James Elbert Ruggles had been an infantryman for only fifteen days when he lost his left index fingers and half of his middle finger from an accidental discharge of a gun. he continued his service and fought by his younger brother until Samuel was killed May 21, 1862 at Pulaski, Tennessee. James Elbert fought in many other battles, including the Battle of Chickamunga, in which he was wounded in his left thigh. He was mustered out December 27, 1865 at Victoria, Texas and returned to his native Kentucky. On November 20, 1867 James Elbert Ruggles married Eliza Mary Eritt (born February 6, 1848) and for a few years lived on a farmstead on Cabin Creek in Lewis County, Kentucky. In the late 1870's he moved his family to Kansas and in 1880 settled on a farm in Liberty Township (Southeast Quarter of Section 8, Township 33 South, Range 5 East), which is now owned by Larry Dixon. Silas Anderson Ruggles, Jr., and his family soon followed his brother and settled on a farm also in Liberty Township (Northwest Quarter of Section 8, Township 33 South, Range 5 East) which is now owned by Dr. Chandy Samuel. The children born to James Elbert and Eliza Mary Eritt Ruggles were: Marcellus, married and moved to Missouri to work with the railroad; Annie Laura, married Ambrose Smith and moved to a farm near Latham; James Elza Ruggles, married Edith Genevia Bowser and continued to live in Liberty Township.

James Elbert Ruggles was born in Lewis County, Kentucky. February 23, 1836. He departed this life September 10, 1905, age sixty-nine years, seven months and seventeen days. He was married to Eliza Mary Everett, November 20, 1867. To this union eight children were born. His wife and four children preceeded him to the better world. He was converted and united with the M.E. church south A.D. 1878. He moved to Kansas in 1883 and settled in Liberty township, Cowley County, where he lived untill death claimed his victim to which he surrendered all, and gave up , his life went out. He leaves to mourn four children, three sisters, one brother and a host of friends. He lived a christian life true to his church, true to his God. Funeral service were held by the writer at the residence of Walter Gorden, assosted by Rev Will Steadafter which the remains were laid to restin the Gordon cemetery followed by a large concourse of people.

Bible record shows birthdate as 1/23/1836 and Elizabeth's middle name as Ann. 1900 cen Cowley County Kansas gives his birth as 9/1836, age 64 born Kentucky, 12-53-6-2. 1870 cen Lewis County Kentucky Popular Flats pg 4/493. He had three other children that were stillborn on 9/11/1868, 5/27/1877 and 9/9/1878

Eliza Mary Evertt Ruggles: (Find-A-Grave Memorial)
Obituary as was printed in a Winfield, Kansas newspaper: Ruggles, Eliza Mary Everat (sic) was born in Lewis Co., KY 2/6/1848. Was married to James Ruggles 11/20/1867, died at her home near Winfield, 2/7/1903. Eight children were born to Brother and Sister Ruggles, four of whom died in childhood. Sister Ruggles was converted in 1878, joined the M.E. church South and has lived a consistent Christian ever since. The remains were laid to rest in the Rose Valley Cemetery. Funeral services were had at her home.
